I’d like to dedicate this art show to my grandfather, Manuel Game Peña (an Ecuadorian Sailor who fought in Ecuador’s “BatTle of Jambeli” in 1941 and represented a real-life Popeye to me growing up), Elzie Crisler Segar (The father / creator of Popeye, and a big influence in my art), Jack Mercer (the iconic popeye voice we all know), and Robin Williams (the wonderful actor who brought the legendary sailor to the big screen).

All these men represent Popeye to me and have inspired me throughout the years to have strength & courage as an artist and person. That is the real symbolism about Popeye the sailor, doing the right thing and being strong throughout any time or situation. to stand up for yourself. So if I’m ever in trouble or sad, I just have to think, what would Popeye do?

Stay strong to the finich!

POPEYE PREMIERE PHOTOS FROM SEPTEMBER 5TH, 2014

Can’t believe it has already been a week since the premiere of the Popeye Art Show, “Strong to the Finich!” It has been a dream come true to curate and organize this art show. Below are some pictures of the show’s premiere and festivities…

image

Popeye poster (by Chogrin) & Stand-up (provided by King Features) greeted guests into the gallery. I always envisioned the show with a nautical theme (anchors, ship-wheels, fishing nets, life preservers, etc.)

Frank Caruso, myself (Chogrin), and Bob Cavin III discussing the art on the wall.

Thank-you to Popeye Energy for providing these awesome and delicious drinks for the show! More information on Popeye Energy Drinks at www.popeyeenergy.com.

A big thanks to Popeye Spinach for sponsoring the show as well. www.sagercreekveggies.com/brands/popeye

Awesome tattoo artist, Johnny Vampotna (johnnyvampotna.wordpress.com), was present to lay ink on any guest that wanted an anchor on them. Towards the end of the night almost 20 people walked away with a permanent anchor on them.

Freshly tattooed and posing with their Popeye Energy Drinks are artists: Eric Esquivel & Hannah Nance Partlow

Many Popeye fans like cartoonist, Michael Aushenker, were there to show their excitement and appreciation for the 85 year old sailor.

More pictures and information soon!
